http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Camp Leakey research camp was our second stop, established in 1971 by Dr. Birute Galdikas to rescue Orangutans and one of Dr. Leakey's "angels" along with Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall. The Orangutans are fed at 2:00 p.m. each day and there were more visitors here including a group of U.K. volunteers from Orangutan Foundation. Many Orangutans appeared out of the forest to snarf down bananas, other fruits and milk even before the "official" feeding time. They're no dummies and hang around the food storage areas. You are not allowed anywhere on the premises without an official guide. These are very strong apes, don't think twice about approaching humans and grabbing whatever they want.
