http://www.earthprotect.com/beauty-and-fashion/viewvideo/2488/oil-spill/bp-oil-spill-disaster-mutated-sea-life-shrimp-without-eyes-crabs-without-claws.html

Eyeless shrimp, fish with oozing sores and other mutant creatures found in the Gulf of Mexico are raising concerns over lingering effects of the BP oil spill. On April 20, 2010, an explosion aboard the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 people and spewed an estimated 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf, in the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Two years later, scientists and commercial fishers alike are finding shrimp, crab and fish that they believe have been deformed by the chemicals unleashed in the spill, according to an extensive report by Al Jazeera English. "At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these," Tracy Kuhns, a commercial fisher from Barataria, La., told Al Jazeera, showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp. 'Eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills....' - Darla Rooks, Louisiana fisher Darla Rooks, another lifelong fisher from Port Sulfur, La., told the broadcaster she was seeing "eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills and others with large pink masses hanging off their eyes and gills."

Rooks added that she had never seen such deformities in Gulf waters in her life -- a refrain common to most fishers featured in the report -- and said her seafood catch last year was "ten percent what it normally is." A survey led by the University of South Florida after the spill found that between two and five percent of fish in the Gulf now have skin lesions or sores, compared to data from before the spill, when just one-tenth of one percent of fish had any growths or sores. Scientists blamed the mutations on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released from the spill's submerged oil as well as the two million gallons of the dispersant Corexit that BP used in an attempt to clean up the spill. "The dispersants used in BP's draconian experiment contain solvents, such as petroleum distillates and 2-butoxyethanol. Solvents dissolve oil, grease, and rubber," Riki Ott, a toxicologist and marine biologist explained to Al Jazeera. "It should be no surprise that solvents are also notoriously toxic to people, something the medical community has long known." BP has maintained that Gulf seafood is safe, saying in a statement, "Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world, and, according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident." On Wednesday BP sealed an out-of-court, $7.8 billion settlement with lawyers acting on behalf of thousands of individuals and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Under the deal, the Gulf seafood industry is slated to receive over $2 billion for economic loss.

The U.S. mainstream media has picked up the story but only after Al-Jazeera's report/investigation and the U.S. MSM is only posting it on their "blogs"/articles sections... no news videos (yet, that I have seen) addressing this issue.
This is what should be on the evening news. It concerns our food supply. So, leave it to a foreign news agency to tell us the most vital things we need to know about whats really going on with our country. :/ Share the info.

Mount Rainier in America is an example of such a place: there is no vegetation, therefore no herbivores and thus no carnivores. However, beneath its frosty surface, algae grow and some insects, such as ladybirds visit the slopes. Africa's mountains are permanently snow-covered, and beneath peaks such as Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, there are communities of plants and animals. However, they endure extremes of temperature within 24 hours like no other. At night they are in danger of freezing solid, and during the day they may be robbed of moisture. Lobelias combat this by either producing pectin or insulating themselves with an abundance of leaves analogous to a fur coat. The Andes run the length of South America and are surrounded by the altiplano. On these high plains there is a large and varied population of animals. Antarctica is bigger than the whole of Europe and is for the most part devoid of life. However, its shores and waters are fertile and are home to fur seals, their main food (krill), and several species of penguin. By contrast, because of its connection to more temperate regions, the Arctic has been colonised by a large variety of species. They include Arctic Foxes, polar bears, lemmings, Snowy Owls, and the region's most powerful hunter, the Inuit. It is also a temporary home to migratory animals, such as the caribou and snow goose.

Broadcast 19 January 1984, the first episode begins in the world's deepest valley: that of the Kali Gandaki river in the Himalayas. Its temperatures range from those of the tropics in its lower reaches to that of the poles higher up. It therefore shows how creatures become adapted to living in certain environments. The higher that Attenborough travels, the more bleak and mountainous is the terrain, and the more suited to it are the animals that live there. However, such adaptations are comparatively recent: these mountains were formed from the sea bed some 65 million years ago. To show the force of nature responsible for this, Attenborough stands in front of an erupting volcano in Iceland and handles a piece of basalt; the Giant's Causeway is an example of what happens to it over a great length of time. The Icelandic volcanoes represent the northern end of a fissure that is mostly underwater and runs down one side of the globe, forming volcanic islands en route where it is above sea level. It is such activity, known as plate tectonics, from deep within the Earth that pulled apart Africa and South America and created the Atlantic Ocean. Footage of the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 shows what decimation it caused. However, this pales in comparison to the destruction caused by Krakatoa in 1883, which Attenborough relates in detail. When such pressure beneath the Earth shifts, it results in hot springs and caverns — which themselves support life.

For Nisar Malik, who led the expedition, these images sparked a passion that compelled him to return. With cameraman Mark Smith, he spent two years documenting the snow leopard's daily life, finally lifting the veil on the most elusive of all cats.

Broadcast (2010) Attenborough's journey continues in Canada's Rocky Mountains, where fossils document an explosion in animal diversity never seen before or since. Travelling from there to North Africa, the rainforests of Australia and the east coast of Scotland, Attenborough discovers how animals evolved to conquer not only the oceans but also the land and air. These remote and fascinating creatures are brought to life as never before with the help of cutting edge scientific technology and photorealistic visual effects. From the first large predators to the first legs on land, these were creatures that evolved the traits and tools that allow animals to survive.

In fifty years of broadcasting, David Attenborough has travelled the globe to document the living world in all its wonder. Now, in a landmark series, he completes his journey by going back in time to the very roots of the tree of life, in search of the very first animals. From the fog bound coastline of Newfoundland to the deserts of North Africa and the rainforests of Queensland, Attenborough finds evidence in fossils and living animals of an extraordinary period in Earth's history, half a billion years ago, when animals first appeared in the oceans.

From the first eyes that saw, to the first predators that killed and the first legs that walked on land, these were creatures that evolved the traits and tools that allow all animals, including us, to survive to this day. Stunning photography and state of the art visual effects combine with the captivating charm of the world's favourite naturalist. Bringing together fossil finds from the last few years that have transformed our understanding of early life forms with photorealistic CGI technology, First Life brings these animals and their environments back to life in brilliant detail. Broadcast (2010) Attenborough's journey begins in a forest near his childhood home in Leicester, where a fossil discovery transformed our understanding of the evolution of complex life. Travelling to the fog bound coastline of Newfoundland and the Australian outback, Attenborough unearths the earliest forms of animal life to exist on Earth. These bizarre and wonderful creatures are brought to life with the help of cutting edge scientific technology and photorealistic visual effects. From the first animal forms that moved to the first mouths that ate, these were creatures that evolved the tools that allow all animals, including ourselves, to survive to this day.

From the first television images of Earth from space, to the now iconic Apollo photographs of Earth, to Voyager's "pale blue dot," NASA has changed how we think about exploring Earth and even how we see Earth.

Looking back from space provides far more than thought-provoking pictures. NASA's fleet of Earth-observing satellites orbits our planet multiple times each day, scanning the air, land and seas for critical information about how our planet behaves and how it is changing. Computer-aided visualization of these otherwise invisible reams of data continues to show us radical new ways of looking at Earth.

To mark Earth Day 2012, we are for the second year in a row inviting you to create your own compelling video vision of NASA's exploration of Earth -- The Home Frontier. Submit your creation to us and a panel of judges will select the best submission, with a fitting award on the line.

The winner will receive behind-the-scenes access to the next rocket launch of a NASA Earth-observing satellite. The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), a joint project of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in January 2013.

Plastics In Our Oceans: The 'Plastiki' Expedition. David de Rothschild and his boat, the 'Plastiki', will set sail across the Pacific soon. Find out how a boat made entirely of plastic hopes to rid the oceans of the stuff.

---

A voyage across the ocean in a plastic boat seems an unlikely way to fight the buildup of plastic in the ocean. Yet that is just what David de Rothschild and team are planning as they build a 60 foot boat made entirely from recycled plastic.

Dubbed 'Plastiki', after Thor Hyerdahls 'Kon-Tiki' that made a similar voyage in 1947, the vessel is being manufactured out of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - the same material used to make water bottles.

Their goal is to change the public view of plastic as a one-use material into one that sees plastic for what it really is - a cheap and versatile raw material that can be reused time and time again.

The voyage calls attention to the toxic soup created from decades of dumping used plastic into the ocean. The mess created by our throw-away society has been consolidated by the winds and currents of the North Pacific Gyre into vast floating garbage patches.

Much of the plastic is visible - bottles, toys, bags, netting, etc., but most of what is floating is invisible, because over time, plastic breaks apart into micro-particles. In some areas of the gyre the ratio of plastic to plankton is as high six to one.

Birds, fish and mammals choke on and are poisoned by the bigger pieces, while the tiny particles are ingested by small marine life and enter the food chain. To make matters worse, the micro-particles attract and absorb toxic chemicals that are ingested as well.

As de Rothschild likes to say, the solution to pollution is not dilution. We need to change our thinking about the life cycle of plastic. The voyage of "Plastiki" demonstrates that plastic is not the problem its how we use plastic.

We dont think of steel as a material to be dumped in the ocean after a single use. Steel is melted down and reformed. We can do the same with plastic - it is a matter of changing how we view it.

John Colapinto wrote about the Plastiki, a boat made entirely of recyclable plastics, that David de Rothschild plans to sail across the Pacific Ocean.

Here, de Rothschild and members of the crew talk about the building of the boat, at Pier 31 in San Francisco, California. This video was filmed in January 2009; since then, Mike Rose, the boats chief builder, has left the project.

Today, an investigative team from the Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise found oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill on the shores of Horn Island, just off the coast of Mississippi. Tarballs at various stages of weathering and various sizes were found on both the leeward and windward sides of the islands. On one beach, a protected turtle nest had been marked just a few feet away from tarballs.

Instead, mixed, dissolved and dispersed into the water this oil it causing as yet unquantified and potentially highly significant effects on the Gulf's aquatic ecosystem," said Adam Walters, Science Coordinator.

Every hour in Louisiana, an area of coastal land the size of a football field vanishes under water. Since the 1930s, almost 1,900 square miles of wetlands -- an area almost the size of Delaware -- has disappeared from the Louisiana coast.

For over 35 years, Environmental Defense Fund has been working in the Mississippi River Delta, advocating for large-scale restoration projects to restore and revitalize the region. We are working to instill a sense of urgency and a national commitment to a bold restoration plan for the area.

Working as part of a national coalition, our mission is to secure the funding, governance and political momentum necessary to support and maintain a healthy and self-sustaining Mississippi River Delta. We are working with state and federal governments to champion support for large-scale restoration projects and to secure the necessary revenue streams. Our goal is to implement a self-sufficient multi-agency, multi-disciplinary governance structure capable of putting in place a self-sustaining public works program for the delta.

The River Huai, like many rivers in China, can no longer supply local agriculture with its lifeblood - water.

A lethal chemical cocktail has left white, effervescent foam bubbling along its surface. But the determination of central government to clean up the black, polluted river by the year 2000 meets with resistance. Local government is torn between a clean river or environmental checks on economic development. Paper factories supporting 20,000 people profit by disposing sludgy pollutants in the river. Hard access footage reveals that even a 'model' factory hoses frothy, evil smelling water into the Huai. A fisherman on a nearby house boat has not caught a fish in ten years. He dissolves aluminium compounds in a bucket of river water just to purify it for household chores. In the city of Bengbu a restaurateur keeps his customers happy by rinsing his vegetables in bottled mineral water. Secret interviews show that local people believe it will be impossible to clean the river up by 2000.

Nov 2007
In the past six years, infant birth defects in China have increased by an unprecedented 40%. This rise is being blamed on pollution from factories. Now green campaigners are taking on the multinationals.
"The untreated waste is pumped out secretly at night", states activist Wu Deng Ming, pointing at a water outlet leading from a factory into a river. "People living along the river have enlarged livers", claims one local. They suffer from: "loss of appetite or cancer and all sorts of terminal diseases". Although strong laws governing pollution exist, these are regularly flouted. "Some local officials give protection to polluters", claims Ma Jun. In an attempt to put pressure on polluters, campaigners are naming and shaming guilty companies online. "We let people know that this company, with such a popular brand, is violated waste water discharge standards". There are also signs that central government is taking the problem more seriously. "The state is very serious about environmental problems", states official Zhou Linbo. Some factories have been closed down. But strong resistance to change still exists. "Polluting factories hire hooligans to deal with people they believe will damage their reputation", claims Wu Deng Ming. Other companies threaten to relocate to Vietnam or Indonesia where; "we can still discharge more of less freely".

Indonesians are hoping new funding from the Asian Development Bank will allow the government to clean up the garbage-choked Citarum River. Fishermen are among those most severely affected by the pollution. Citarum, the biggest river basin in Java, produces 80 percent of the surface water supply for Jakarta and delivers about 20 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product. It runs for 200 miles from Bandung in West Java until it reaches the sea at Karawang, outside the capital, Jakarta. The Citarum provides fresh water, electricity and some marine life for daily sustenance for the 30 million people who live in the river basin in Indonesia's densely populated Java Island. Since the 1980s sections of the river have become choked with garbage and stagnant with industrial chemicals, sewerage and other wastes from the residents along its banks – it has been called the world's most polluted river. Fishermen like Ujan Sujana have to work much harder for a living in the once fish-rich waters. [Ujan Sujana, Fisherman]: "Because of the garbage and wastes in the river, my daily income dropped. I hope the government gives attention to the polluted river as it affects our income." Environmental activist group Forum on Environment and Social have urged the government to rehabilitate the river's upper course. The group worries that the massive pollution will have a domino effect further downriver. [Saung Dwi, Environmentalist]: "The problem first started in the 1980s before it worsened in the 1980s when factories, especially textile plants, began operating at Citarum's upper course." The Indonesian government's efforts to clean and rehabilitate the river received a major boost last December when the Asian Development Bank approved $500 million U.S. dollars to fund the project. Some of the money has already been disbursed but officials say the money has yet to filter down to the ground. [Andung Dady, Supervisor, Rivers & Lakes Rehabilitation]: "The loan is definitely there but the implementation is still on progress as we are negotiating the costs. We have launched a biodigestion program for animal wastes to generate electricity which can be used for their cooking and electrical needs and prevent them from polluting the river." Dady says the Asian Development Bank funds will be used to support community sanitation solutions, the construction of solid waste facilities and wastewater treatment plants in the Citarum river basin. It may take another 25 years, however, before the Citarum is returned to the pristine waterway it once was.
