SEATTLE (CN) - Animal-rights activists claim an orca is being held in an "inadequate tank" in the Miami Seaquarium. They sued the National Marine Fisheries Service for excluding captive killer whales from listing under the Endangered Species Act.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund, People for the Ethical Treatment of Individuals and three individuals challenge the NMFS decision "to exclude from the listing of the Southern Resident killer whale population all captive members of that population and their progeny."
The federal complaint focuses on a whale named Lolita, who was captured more than 40 years ago, and has been held at the Miami Seaquarium. The activists claim Lolita is being "kept in an inadequate tank, without companions of her own species or adequate protection from the sun."

Amazon River Dolphin Populations in Rapid Decline

Posted by: Brett Ensor in Animals

Brett Ensor

Of all the remarkable species that inhabit the Amazon river basin, few are as iconic or as threatened as Amazon river dolphins. For decades, the pinkish hued dolphins have been targeted by fishermen who view the skilled aquatic hunters as competitors for food -- leading to thousands of the animals to be poached every year by villagers, who often then use their meat as bait. But despite a campaign to save the river dolphins, researchers say that they're continuing to be killed at a troubling rate -- with some populations showing a decline of 10 percent annually.

Helping Animals Relocate

Posted by: Christo Brock in Animals

Humans hate change, and they hate moving to suit someone else’s agenda—that’s why politicians avoid projects that require eminent domain. Animals and plants don’t deal particularly well with change, either. They’ve adapted to live in a certain types of places, after all. But the massive amount of carbon pollution humans release into the atmosphere is going to fundamentally alter those animals' and plants' comfy niches, which means they're going to have to move to survive.

North America's Top 10 Most Endangered Mammals

Posted by: Ashley Grauberger in Animals

Ashley Grauberger

As I was researching the most endangered mammals, I came across the top 10 mammals that are the most endangered. I found these mammals on IUCN.org (International Union for Conservation for Nature). This organization finds solutions to different environment challenges. The first endangered mammal is that of a Wood Bison. They are found in Alaska and the Northern Territories. They are being extinct because of hunting and loss of habitat.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) there are many endangered species all over the world and some more than others. The IUCN helps the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges.

The most critically endangered types of deer/antelope are the Addax, Hirola, Ader’s Duiker, Dama Gazelle, and the Saiga. These are found in parts of Africa, Europe as well as Asia. They are getting killed off because of other predators eating them or because of people hunting them.

Elusive Snow Leopards Thrive in Surprising Spot

Posted by: Maggie in Animals

Maggie

Thanks to the vigilant eye of camera traps stationed high in Afghanistan's remote northeast mountains, researchers have uncovered exciting news: A population of endangered snow leopards, one of the most elusive big cats on the planet, is thriving in the region.

The big cats live among the dramatic peaks of the desolate Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of land 220 miles (354 kilometers) long, and sandwiched between Tajikistan to the north, Pakistan to the south, and a tiny border with China to the east.
