You might have heard about the story of Raquel Nelson — nearly a year ago, her 4 year-old son was killed by a drunk driver as they crossed the street with the rest of their family. Nelson and her daughter were injured, too. The drunk driver ended up serving six months of prison, and was released, despite having two prior hit and run violations on his record

Nelson, meanwhile, was charged for manslaughter because she failed to use a crosswalk that was a third of a mile away. She faces up to three years in prison.

planting_tree1. WHAT IS THE MILLION TREES L.A. INITIATIVE?
Mayor Villaraigosa is committed to making Los Angeles the largest, cleanest, and greenest city in the United States. The Million Trees L.A. (MTLA) Initiative will accomplish this through public-private partnerships that will plant one million trees throughout Los Angeles.

2. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS WHEN IT SEEMS THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS FOR THE CITY TO BE DOING?
It is important to enhance the natural environment. Planting and maintaining trees will help clean the air, clean up polluted urban runoff, help make streets and buildings cooler and provide an all-around more livable environment. Planting trees will also increase property values, absorb noise, and reduce stress and crime.

Sears Tower Going Greener

Posted by: joe joe in Green Design

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, executives at the Sears Tower announced plans for the most significant sustainable modernization projects of an existing building ever undertaken.

The project will result in energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions to the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, cutting base building electricity use by up to 80% (by way of a combination of energy savings and cogeneration). The energy savings will equal 68 million kilowatt hours annually or 150,000 barrels of oil every year.
