UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY, DECEMBER 10, 2011Posted by: Joseph in Newsletter Archive Tagged in: newsletter , earth protect
|
In 2011, people across the world took to the streets to voice their rights—from Tahrir Square to Arab Spring across the Middle East to Occupy Wall Street in the United States and Canada, it’s been an extraordinary year.
Earth Protect supports the definition of sustainability from our partner Earth Charter, which includes social justice, peace and relief from extreme poverty. That is to “promote the transition to a sustainable way of life founded on: respect and care for the community of life; ecological integrity; universal human rights; respect for diversity; economic justice; democracy; and a culture of peace.”

USE LESS STUFF DAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2011Posted by: Joseph in Newsletter Archive |
Robert Lilienfeld and William Rathje, authors of Use Less Stuff: Environmental Solutions for Who We Really Are, are also the founders of Use Less Stuff Day, celebrated since 1994 on the Thursday preceding Thanksgiving. Both efforts are an effort to convince consumers to think about how they consume – products, electricity, water and other daily routine resources.
The holidays are when Americans generate the most trash. Did you know:
• Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags totals about 4 million tons.
• Third class mail adds another 4.4 million tons to mail bags and, ultimately, to garbage bags.
• Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Americans send out more than 2.3 billion cards. Laid end to end, that's almost 26,000 miles of cards, enough to circle the Earth and then some.

Can We Carry the PlanetPosted by: Aaron Bitkoff in Sustainable Development |

The idea that human societies, at their best, seek to evolve toward a more perfect embodiment of humankind’s shared aspirations for peace, freedom, justice, prosperity, personal and collective wellbeing. Today, and for the foreseeable future, that list also includes sustainability: living within the natural carrying capacity of our planet, in order to preserve and protect the wellbeing of Earth’s biosphere upon which all living things depend for survival. Over many centuries, human societies have devolved away from sustainability. It is high time to evolve back.
