Meet the Scalloped Hammerhead

Posted by: joe joe in Wildlife Conservation

This shark's oddly shaped head is thought to be a mechanism to spread out its highly specialised sense organs, which amongst other things help it to detect electrical currents created by its prey. A useful skill to have when you have an entire ocean to scan for food!

Helping Animals Relocate

Posted by: Christo Brock in Animals

Humans hate change, and they hate moving to suit someone else’s agenda—that’s why politicians avoid projects that require eminent domain. Animals and plants don’t deal particularly well with change, either. They’ve adapted to live in a certain types of places, after all. But the massive amount of carbon pollution humans release into the atmosphere is going to fundamentally alter those animals' and plants' comfy niches, which means they're going to have to move to survive.

The Deepwater Horizion and Silver Tip pipeline disasters: How many more?

Posted by: Peter Gephart in Clean Water

April 20th, 2010 marks the day the worst oil spill in history occurred. This is the day the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig exploded and spewed approximately 170 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. This is roughly fifteen times more oil than spilled during the Exxon-Valdez accident off the coast of Alaska in 1989.  The spill lasted for 87 days until BP was able to plug the leaky well and stop the spill of crude.

Over a year later, the Gulf Coast region is still devastated, with both people and animals feeling the effects. Fisherman have lost millions of dollars in Louisiana alone, and will continue to lose money over the next two years.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) there are many endangered species all over the world and some more than others. The IUCN helps the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges.

The most critically endangered types of deer/antelope are the Addax, Hirola, Ader’s Duiker, Dama Gazelle, and the Saiga. These are found in parts of Africa, Europe as well as Asia. They are getting killed off because of other predators eating them or because of people hunting them.

Why Mattel Toy Packaging is Destroying The Rain Forest

Posted by: carol barbeito in Earth Violators

Greenpeace has launched a global campaign against Mattel the world's largest toy company. This is part of a decades long campaign to force multi-national corporations to purge operations links to rain forest destruction. Mattel is accused of packing Barbie and other toys with paper made with hardwoods from Indonesian rain forests, a haven for such endangered species as orangutans, tigers, elephants and leopards. Scientists link rapid destruction of rain forests with global climate change.
