All are aware of the tragic loss of biodiversity that this planet is current going through in various ecosystems. However, a new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report shows that when good policies are in place, natural ecosystems can sustain themselves and thrive. NOAA has released its annual report, stating that a record six fish populations have been rebuilt to healthy levels in 2011. This brings the number of rebuilt US marine fish populations to 27 since the start of the 21st century, showing that great strides have been made to end overfishing thanks to all interested parties.

CO2 threatens fish's very survival in oceans

Posted by: Amir in Ocean/Seas/Coastlines

Can you imagine seas and oceans completely bereft of colourful fish? The possibility may not be all that far-fetched, thanks to rising carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By the end of the century, CO2 concentrations in seas will interfere with fish's ability to hear, smell, turn and evade predators, says Phillip Munday, professor at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and the James Cook University.

Visitors to this city’s burial ground learn more from the dead, particularly about the whale shark and other endangered sea creatures.

The 12-year-old “fish cemetery” of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has become a field school all year round, even to the curious, according to Westly Rosario, chief of the agency’s National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center here.

Oceana turned its press conference yesterday at the National Press Club into a pop quiz: Organizers laid out skinless fillets of halibut next to skinless fillets of fluke, both without labels, and then asked the gathered audience to identify each fish by sight. Oceana then repeated the test for red snapper vs. hake and for farmed vs. wild salmon.

TOKYO -- Fears about contaminated seafood spread Wednesday despite reassurances that radiation in the waters off Japan's troubled nuclear plant poses no health risk.

Although experts say radioactive particles are unlikely to build up significantly in fish, the seafood concerns in the country that gave the world sushi are yet another blemish for Brand Japan.

Find Sustainable Seafood with Seafood Watch

Many people eat food without thinking much about it, aside from its taste and its nutritional/caloric value. But there are also people who care about more than that, such as where their food came from and how the animal/creature was captured and killed. Unfortunately, that information isn’t generally available to the average consumer. Going to a farmer’s market certainly helps to know more about the food you are purchasing, but for a concerned consumer, that isn’t enough.

Despair in new species of fish found

I am completely fascinated by this recent news story on CNN.com. On September 10, 2010, an international team of marine biologists discovered a new, never-before-seen species of fish living deep in the Pacific Ocean. The fish, a pure white species of snailfish, was discovered living 4 and ½ miles below the surface of the water; a depth that was previously thought to be devoid of fish. This news is just amazing to me. Isn’t the snailfish a beautiful creature, with its almost angelic appearance? How marvelous that we have the ability to explore the ocean, with its creatures so rare and exotic that they appear to dwell on a different planet.
