It is touching and encouraging that people have removed the endangered turtle eggs to Florida. Lovely to be able to take positive concrete action to save this important species.
Now the oil burning is thought to be harming endangered sea turtles. US District Judge ordered BP to restrict controlled burns of oil. We need to find a turtle group to support on this, anyone?
Did you see Bizarro this morning, the comic strip shows guys filling their gas tanks by siphoning oil out of the ocean. Caption, "We've been hearing about "alternative energy", but I had no idea it would be sea water." Wow never in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever have to think of our Gulf as an oil pit.
There are many other organizations involved, both small and large. If you live in one of the Gulf states, I hope that you might already be supporting one of your local groups.
The Oiled Wildlife Care Network at UC Davis has also set up a phone number for people who are interested in volunteering with the oil spill response effort. That toll free number is 1-866-448-5816.
It is tragic to watch this awful disaster unfold and be helpless. It is surely time to take a much more cautious approach to off shore drilling. And I must say I am very disappointed to learn that the government watch dog role had once again gotten diluted by being too cozy with those they were to oversee.
