The houses are minutes from the University of Colorado Hospital where all the transplant patients go for surgery and follow-up. After surgery, patients are heavily immuno-suppressed and wide-open to both airborne or surface bacteria and viruses.
Before TLC, the only real option was to stay in a hotel. This gets very old for staying the three months they are required to stay in the Denver area after surgery! At TLC, patients never have to feel alone. There is personnel available to call for advice in emergencies. The Executive Director is a lung transplant recipient, and is happy to talk to both patients and caregivers about their experiences. TLC supports the protocol of UCH.
