It's been 20 years since the first Gap Adventures trip was run in the Amazon, when a special relationship was formed between community leader, Delphin and Bruce. A relationship that was not just the beginning of one the worlds largest adventure travel companies, but also the foundation for the shared vision of how travel, when managed responsibly, can support both community development as well as enlighten travellers to different way of life outside their own.

It's also the start of a new relationship, between two seasoned travellers, driving their commitment to sustainable community development through the Footprints Network and Planeterra.

Simon, seeing first hand how the Footprints Network, a group of like minded companies funding community development through micro donations made online, can make a positive impact to the local community.

2,070 travellers funding the building of a new school classroom, a much needed and community driven initiative to help support local education.

Find out what drives people not just to make a difference, but to work hand in hand with local communities, to harness the power of travel and give back to those that have shared their unique way of life with travellers for the past 20 years.

NORTH SAANICH -- Peter Ross is a world-class scientist and expert on how man-made toxins affect killer whales. By next April, he could also be unemployed along with 74 others across the country. "It's a disturbing sign for a country that used to pride itself on the scientific research establishment we had" he says.

Ross is one of nine people in North Saanich who will lose their jobs when the Department of Fisheries and Oceans shuts down its entire contaminants program, which he says will leave five junior biologists to monitor pollution in Canada's three oceans. "I can't think of another country in the world that has a coastline that doesn't have some form of scientific capacity to look at the threat pollution represents to the health of our oceans."

Victoria Zoologist Anna Hall's take on the cuts isn't any kinder. "It's just astonishing to me this is happening right now, and internationally, as a scientist, it's embarrassing."
Hall calls closing the program - reckless. "Some may say who cares if a killer whale has contamination. It doesn't affect me in my life, but in fact it does...killer whales eat salmon, some of us eat salmon. They swim in the ocean; some of us let our dogs & children swim in the ocean."

It's unclear if the shut-down will affect how Canada reacts to the arrival of tonnes of marine debris from the tsunami in Japan. Volunteer groups who organize shoreline cleanups on Vancouver Island, like the Surfrider Foundation, are wondering the same thing. "Right now is really a time to start planning and thinking how we're going to deal with this influx of marine debris" says the foundation's Vancouver Island Chair, Lucas Harris.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans explains the money-saving cuts this way, saying "in lieu of in-house research on the biological effects of contaminants and pesticides, the department will establish an advisory group, and research fund of $1.4 million per year...to get advice on priority issues."

Anna Hall has started to look for work outside the country, because she says if Canada doesn't care about the oceans, there are certainly other nations who do.

Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure "Big Miracle" tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle.

Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can't wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she's also his ex-girlfriend.

With time running out, Rachel and Adam must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales. As the world's attention turns to the top of the globe, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.

http://www.earthprotect.com/oceanseascoastlines/viewvideo/2507/oceanseascoastlines/changing-tides-trailer-hd.html

The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM), Positive H2O and Surfrider Foundation have teamed up with award winning filmmaker Danny Miller to produce the new documentary, CHANGING TIDES. This 15 minute film will bring the issue of oceanic garbage into the public dialogue, where ideas are formed and solutions proposed. The engaging story is told through the eyes of Hawaiian kapuna and professional surfers and windsurfers, scientist and volunteers who share their passion for the ocean and what they are doing to protect it. Their stories bring us an in-depth look at oceanic garbage in the Pacific, and what it means for residents of Hawai'i and other Pacific islands impacted by the waste.

CHANGING TIDES dispels the myths and demonstrates the real dangers of the Northern Pacific Garbage Patch this is nearly twice the size of Texas and looming off Hawaii's shores.
Hawai'i is uniquely poised to tell the story of the floating trash. It is the most remote land mass on Earth, the land mass closest to the North Pacific Gyre, and the first land mass to start seeing the effects of the world's debris. This is the path that many thousands of strains have taken as Sapphire Energy refines our library of commercial strains that will be used in our Green Crude Farm or Integrated Algal BioRefinery (IABR) now under construction in Columbus, NM. At the Green Crude Farm, they world's first commercial demonstration scale algae-to-energy facility, algae will be cultivated in even larger ponds, over 2 acres in size.

Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Iowa State University discovered a family of plant proteins that play a role in the production of seed oils, substances important for animal and human nutrition, biorenewable chemicals and biofuels.

Scoring a rare scientific hat trick, the researchers identified three related proteins in thale cress plants (Arabidopsis thaliana) that regulate the metabolism of fatty acids, chemical components of all cell membranes and vegetable oils. They dubbed these fatty-acid binding proteins FAP1, FAP2 and FAP3.

The findings, reported TBD in Nature, may lead to the development of improved crops yielding higher qualities and quantities of oils, helping to address growing demands for food and fuel and the consequent environmental pressures on the world's ecosystems.

"This work has major implications for modulating the fatty acid profiles of plants, which is terribly important, not only to sustainable food production and nutrition but now to biorenewable chemicals and fuels," says Joseph Noel, director of Salk's Jack H. Skirball Center for Chemical Biology and Proteomics and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator, who led the multidisciplinary study together with Eve Syrkin Wurtele, professor of genetics, development and cell biology at the Plant Research Institute at Iowa State.

Two major problems facing the physical world today can be broadly categorized into (1) how to increase the amount of consumable energy available for the worlds needs and (2) how to decrease the amount of greenhouse gases produced. Of course, these problems are negatively linked together inasmuch as, without further offsets, an increase in the production of carbon fuels leads to an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases produced when these fuels are consumed. In this video we shall look at a method that breaks this negative link by considering a project that increases the worlds supply of oil using biofuels and which at the same time decreases the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide used during its production. The resulting product is a sustainable biofuel whose carbon footprint is neutral inasmuch as the CO2 produced on consumption is essentially balanced by the CO2 used in its production.

Brunswick Community College's (BCC) Center for Aquaculture and Biotechnology (CAB) has implemented a Biofuels from Algae project as a joint effort between the departments of Aquaculture and Biotechnology. This included the design and construction of an 1800 gallon photobioreactor system during phase 1 of the project. Phase II focused on the downstream processing of oil extraction. BCC's CAB has a patent pending status on this process, which is purely mechanical, easily scalable and relatively cheap to implement. The final phase of the project (pending funding) will optimize and refine the oil extraction process, which will give us the opportunity to file a full patent, license the patent to industry or develop a trade secret with an industry partner, which will quickly move the process to commercialization. If the final phase is funded we will also obtain data on the yield of oil production, yield to biodiesel conversion, chemical composition of the extracted oil and determine the best species for use in the process developed at BCC.

This video was taken before the gas reached the four dollar mark. The kick in the ass is that this company will not produce it for the public. So I don't see it effecting pump prices, EVER!

Philips shows that the organisation is concerned about the climat change and the effect it has on the natural environment for e.g. polar bears.

By encouraging companies to replace old
fluorescent lamps with energy efficient lighting
we can make an impact on a global scale.
Rising energy prices and the pressure to reduce CO2 emissions are major issues for many organisations, not to mention the impact that our energy use has on climate change. Fluorescent lighting is the most widely
used technology in the market and therefore offers major opportunities for energy saving. However, many organisations are not aware of the big difference their lighting installation can make. But now, thanks to the new Philips MASTER TL-D Eco range, it is really easy to change to energy efficient lighting.

Eyeless shrimp, fish with oozing sores and other mutant creatures found in the Gulf of Mexico are raising concerns over lingering effects of the BP oil spill. On April 20, 2010, an explosion aboard the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 people and spewed an estimated 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf, in the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Two years later, scientists and commercial fishers alike are finding shrimp, crab and fish that they believe have been deformed by the chemicals unleashed in the spill, according to an extensive report by Al Jazeera English. "At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these," Tracy Kuhns, a commercial fisher from Barataria, La., told Al Jazeera, showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp. 'Eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills....' - Darla Rooks, Louisiana fisher Darla Rooks, another lifelong fisher from Port Sulfur, La., told the broadcaster she was seeing "eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills and others with large pink masses hanging off their eyes and gills."

Rooks added that she had never seen such deformities in Gulf waters in her life -- a refrain common to most fishers featured in the report -- and said her seafood catch last year was "ten percent what it normally is." A survey led by the University of South Florida after the spill found that between two and five percent of fish in the Gulf now have skin lesions or sores, compared to data from before the spill, when just one-tenth of one percent of fish had any growths or sores. Scientists blamed the mutations on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released from the spill's submerged oil as well as the two million gallons of the dispersant Corexit that BP used in an attempt to clean up the spill. "The dispersants used in BP's draconian experiment contain solvents, such as petroleum distillates and 2-butoxyethanol. Solvents dissolve oil, grease, and rubber," Riki Ott, a toxicologist and marine biologist explained to Al Jazeera. "It should be no surprise that solvents are also notoriously toxic to people, something the medical community has long known." BP has maintained that Gulf seafood is safe, saying in a statement, "Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world, and, according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident." On Wednesday BP sealed an out-of-court, $7.8 billion settlement with lawyers acting on behalf of thousands of individuals and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Under the deal, the Gulf seafood industry is slated to receive over $2 billion for economic loss.

The U.S. mainstream media has picked up the story but only after Al-Jazeera's report/investigation and the U.S. MSM is only posting it on their "blogs"/articles sections... no news videos (yet, that I have seen) addressing this issue.
This is what should be on the evening news. It concerns our food supply. So, leave it to a foreign news agency to tell us the most vital things we need to know about whats really going on with our country. :/ Share the info.

"NEW ORLEANS -- Eyeless shrimp, fish with oozing sores and other mutant creatures found in the Gulf of Mexico are raising concerns over lingering effects of the BP oil spill.
"At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these," Tracy Kuhns, a commercial fisher from Barataria, La., told Al Jazeera, showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp."

Mount Rainier in America is an example of such a place: there is no vegetation, therefore no herbivores and thus no carnivores. However, beneath its frosty surface, algae grow and some insects, such as ladybirds visit the slopes. Africa's mountains are permanently snow-covered, and beneath peaks such as Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, there are communities of plants and animals. However, they endure extremes of temperature within 24 hours like no other. At night they are in danger of freezing solid, and during the day they may be robbed of moisture. Lobelias combat this by either producing pectin or insulating themselves with an abundance of leaves analogous to a fur coat. The Andes run the length of South America and are surrounded by the altiplano. On these high plains there is a large and varied population of animals. Antarctica is bigger than the whole of Europe and is for the most part devoid of life. However, its shores and waters are fertile and are home to fur seals, their main food (krill), and several species of penguin. By contrast, because of its connection to more temperate regions, the Arctic has been colonised by a large variety of species. They include Arctic Foxes, polar bears, lemmings, Snowy Owls, and the region's most powerful hunter, the Inuit. It is also a temporary home to migratory animals, such as the caribou and snow goose.

Its temperatures range from those of the tropics in its lower reaches to that of the poles higher up. It therefore shows how creatures become adapted to living in certain environments. The higher that Attenborough travels, the more bleak and mountainous is the terrain, and the more suited to it are the animals that live there. However, such adaptations are comparatively recent: these mountains were formed from the sea bed some 65 million years ago. To show the force of nature responsible for this, Attenborough stands in front of an erupting volcano in Iceland and handles a piece of basalt; the Giant's Causeway is an example of what happens to it over a great length of time. The Icelandic volcanoes represent the northern end of a fissure that is mostly underwater and runs down one side of the globe, forming volcanic islands en route where it is above sea level. It is such activity, known as plate tectonics, from deep within the Earth that pulled apart Africa and South America and created the Atlantic Ocean. Footage of the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 shows what decimation it caused. However, this pales in comparison to the destruction caused by Krakatoa in 1883, which Attenborough relates in detail. When such pressure beneath the Earth shifts, it results in hot springs and caverns — which themselves support life.

For Nisar Malik, who led the expedition, these images sparked a passion that compelled him to return. With cameraman Mark Smith, he spent two years documenting the snow leopard's daily life, finally lifting the veil on the most elusive of all cats.

Broadcast (2010) Attenborough's journey continues in Canada's Rocky Mountains, where fossils document an explosion in animal diversity never seen before or since. Travelling from there to North Africa, the rainforests of Australia and the east coast of Scotland, Attenborough discovers how animals evolved to conquer not only the oceans but also the land and air. These remote and fascinating creatures are brought to life as never before with the help of cutting edge scientific technology and photorealistic visual effects. From the first large predators to the first legs on land, these were creatures that evolved the traits and tools that allow animals to survive.

In fifty years of broadcasting, David Attenborough has travelled the globe to document the living world in all its wonder. Broadcast (2010) Attenborough's journey begins in a forest near his childhood home in Leicester, where a fossil discovery transformed our understanding of the evolution of complex life. Travelling to the fog bound coastline of Newfoundland and the Australian outback, Attenborough unearths the earliest forms of animal life to exist on Earth. These bizarre and wonderful creatures are brought to life with the help of cutting edge scientific technology and photorealistic visual effects. From the first animal forms that moved to the first mouths that ate, these were creatures that evolved the tools that allow all animals, including ourselves, to survive to this day.

This is our centering prayer for Earth Day at MCC in the Valley. We made the Earth a member of our faith community as we journey to become a green Christian church. We hope other faith communities will hear the message of John Denver's song and make a commitment to the biosphere or community of life on Earth. Help to prevent further climate change.
